The Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum’s exhibits depict a variety of biomes, including :
Wetlands
Mangrove Swamp
Desert
Ocean
Grasslands
Other permanent exhibits include the geology of the Witwatersrand, an ecosystem around a fig tree, spiders and scorpions and the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme.
The Day in the Veld, sponsored by SAB, is an innovative exhibit stimulating a day, from dawn to dusk, in the bushveld, accompanied by various sounds and sights that a person might encounter.
“Taung Child” and “Mrs Ples” skulls
The Centre was donated replicas of the skulls of the “Taung Child” and “Mrs Pless” which are on display in the front foyer.
The public are welcome to visit the Natural History Museum during weekdays

Gold Fields Discovery Centre
The Gold Fields Discovery Centre offers participating school groups, visiting the centre, the opportunity to explore and discover many aspects of the environment in the following discovery rooms:
- The Energy Room (sponsored by Eskom)
- The Water Room (sponsored by Rand Water)
- The Biodiversity Room
We use the resources of the educational exhibits in the discovery rooms to enhance our programmes.
